El Dorado summons aggressive spectres to attack your foes, the Cintamani Stone revives fallen teammates, and the Djinn lets you teleport short distances, blinking from spot to spot for a tactical advantage. They have a three-bedroom house. The thoughtful exploration of these characters and their relationships with each other has a subtle payoff which bucks against the typical action coda, and it’s to Naughty Dog’s credit that it’s unafraid to stay true to its characters and their motivations, even if they aren’t as explosive as one might expect.There’s not much to do in the main campaign once you’ve finished it, bar completing your treasure collection, but there’s extended life to be had in Uncharted 4’s confident 5v5 and 4v4 multiplayer. You can either get lucky and eventually get what you want, or you can pay stupid amounts of money for things that in the past we got for free. While Uncharted 4 is a beautiful and thrilling way to pass the time, it feels like an insubstantial experience in the end. Not only is he alive and well, but he's fallen in with criminals, and needs help paying a debt.

Uncharted 4 gives us insight into his past, and the way it shaped his psyche: how he despises authority; how he uses humor as a shield; how he long ago accepted violence as a justifiable means to an end. These moments are not to draw attention to the developers behind the scenes, they are placed deliberately to get you to stop thinking mechanically, and start immersing yourself in the world.He talks a lot about how the Uncharted games are about 'playing along', and I think that applies here as well. It's not enough to call the jungles lush. With Naughty Dog, you can bet that you're going to get a killer vista, but Uncharted 4 asks you to use these moments for introspection. I doubt I'll be spending much time working over the events of Uncharted 4 in my head the way I have for games like Dishonored, Bioshock Infinite, or even Naughty Dog's own The Last of Us. Memes, comics, funny screenshots, arts-and-crafts, etc. These details are painfully human. The dialogue makes sense within the moment.And then there's the presentation of it all. Switch Save your money and rent itThough this game must be good, I can not take this as industry "standard". It’s here that we see characters bristle and soften, brought slowly to life with considered writing and a peerless voice cast. It's a stunning combination of disparate parts. The regularity of such beauty borders on ridiculous: it may be capped at 30 frames per second, but this is the prettiest game I’ve ever played.With such strong systems at its disposal, then, it's disappointing that Naughty Dog doesn’t build more theatrical context around them.
